MODERN EMULSIONS -
PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF PHOTOGRAPHIC APPLICATION
by Derek & Jesse Seaward

Photographers, Derek and Jesse Seaward, exhibited at Found together as Seaward Images. The collection is printed not only on paper, but on silk and cotton, reflecting both photographers’ interest in innovative printing techniques and the possibilities of digital imaging. Visitors saw subjects from all over the world (and from close to home), shot with curiosity, excitement, tenderness and an attraction to the subtleties of light. Although both Derek and Jesse shoot on location, ‘base camp’ is at Trinity Buoy Wharf and they were proud to present the first Found Gallery exhibition of their work.

Private view:
30th May 2007
Public exhibition:

Derek Seaward

Derek Seaward entered professional photography in the late ‘60s and was first attracted to the fashion business, where he spent a glamorous year assisting well-known photographers on assignments for the leading magazines of the time. But with his love of light, it was the still life images in his growing portfolio that attracted his first commissioning clients.

An ad agency art director who loved the way Derek lit his subjects asked if he could do the same with a car. Suddenly he had found a world he loved, large objects to be shot around the globe in places we all dream of seeing!

The challenge of doing large shoots over many weeks with crews of up to 40 people began to give Derek Seaward the rewards he had always wanted in life - building large sets in strange places, battling the weather, the languages, waiting for just the right light and making friends around the world. And it was while shooting these large car campaigns that Derek started to take his own pictures of the places he was seeing, spending those extra days to see a little more of the places he was invading.

Soon the volume of these personal pictures grew and in the early nineties Derek had his first show at the Association of Photographers gallery, to much acclaim.

Now, after many years in the business of taking pictures, his portfolio has become extremely varied. The variety of media on which the images appear is growing too. From 48 sheet billboards and glossy magazines to a first at Found Galery, a two seater sofa! (See panel, right)

Having worked with every car manufacturer from Alpha Romeo to Volvo as well as numerous global clients and magazines, Derek Seaward continues to work in advertising. "My love of photography never wanes and I still get the same thrill from every picture I take."

Jesse Seaward

Though still in his 20s, Jesse Seaward has been in the photography business for more than a decade. In that time, he has worked with both editorial and advertising clients and has travelled widely, most recently to the Swiss Alps and Equatorial Guinea.

Jesse’s distinctive personal work turns a fine graphic eye on everything from shoes to beaches.
