CONTROL AND CHAOS
A COLLECTION OF PAINTINGS ABOUT PAINTINGS
John Peters
John Peters' current work has evolved primarily from an
obsessive response to his medium. What fuels John's spontaneous
and instinctive approach to painting is a fascination with
liquid colour and a desire to allow complete freedom for
natural phenomena whilst, paradoxically, retaining total
control of the event.
It is also the event, the act of painting, and the magnification
of emotions, the highs and lows that are encountered with
in the process that form the content of John Peters' work. |
Private view:
Thursday 19th July from 6.30 - 8.30pm
Public exhibition:
20th July - 25th August 2007
The collage elements (elephants) are both an extension
and explanation of the work. Expressive of psychological
states that refer simultaneously to aspects of self and
moments in time. The particular moment, the conception
of the painting, being relived and explored over time through
figurative abstractions that are painstakingly reworked
until an agreement with the painting has been reached.
The oppositional processes that John Peters employs are
themselves emphatic of the contradictions that are contained
within his work, work that sparks an internal discourse
between the Apollonian and Dionysian. Work which he feels
is both celebratory and mournful, fuses beauty with the
bizarre, brings order to chaos and presents the sublime
with the ridiculous in an informed yet idiosyncratic whole
whose revisionary/contempory hybrid amalgamate makes reference
to, but ultimately resists classification.
Put simply, John Peters makes paintings about painting.
