With a deep rooted respect for traditional methods, she
believes that the ability to draw (e.g. human form) is
vital as this proves a basic and essential skill for eye
and development which is demonstrated in her constant return
to the figure.
She approaches her paintings as she does her life, spontaneous
and aggressive but within a structured balance of positive
and negative. Often (but not always) starting with a composition
of an image in mind, she instinctively creates forms whilst
battling with the image that falls in and out of the painting,
trying to find balance between what is natural to her and
what she expects from form is an ongoing clash of which
the energy in the picture is proof.
Though not knowing the exact outcome, she uses certain
constraints so to avoid imbalance and negative space. The
work is an example of a constant battle of form and fluidity,
instinct and manipulation, human nature and what we expect
to see, where to start and where to stop, energy and fear,
life!
Always working and struggling with a notion of beginning
and end in mind, Kerry challenges the presumption of being
an abstract expressionist alone. The sometimes fragmented
nature of her work also brings to mind the work of the
Cubists. By striving to execute the work with discipline
and structure Kerry identifies with the methods of the
cubist movement, and does so, retaining a sense of place
in her paintings.
She avoids following or forcing specific
styles on herself and thrives on the changes within herself.
'By pushing a style or theme to far in my work, I may leave
it open to manipulation by what surrounds us, thus in turn
compromising my ability to create instinctively and honestly'
